A doom-metal apocalypse in book form. It’s a Swedish OSR game set in a dying and zealots scrambling for loot and meaning before the lights go out. The rules are brutal and stripped-down, but the real draw is the design: neon-yellow pages, chaotic layouts, art that looks like a black metal album sleeve. It won a bunch of design awards and spawned a huge wave of third-party content, partly because its license is wide open.

Lore

Mörk Borg rolls with its own setting. Here is what is known as-written.

Places

  • Galgenbeck. The greatest city. Built around a cathedral of The Two-Headed Basilisks. Ruled by Josilfa Migol.
  • Bergen Chrypt. Home to She. Gate from this dying world to the unknown. Catacombs and ice-caked peaks. None have succeeded in crossing.
  • Valley of the Unfortunate Dead. Home to He.
  • Tveland. Continent containing Galgenbeck and Sarkash.
  • Sarkash. Vast spreading forest. Contains Graven-tosh.
  • Graven-Tosh. Cemetery of undead. Where on least expects, in a halo of dying trees, far in the depths of Sarkash.
  • Palace of the Shadow King. Gothic black castle. Most of it lies in ruins, catacombs and cellars. Tunnels sprawl beneath. Inner wing homes the Shadow King. Rises over Graven-Tosh.
  • Grift. City state separated from the continent by three cyclopean-sized bridges. Once a shelter, harmonious and the light of reason, now fallen into disrepair. Monsters crawl the dried cracked earth.
  • Múr. Bottomless abyss.

Factions

  • Creton Order. ???
  • The Two-Headed Basilisks. An orthodox branch of the Creton order. Discovered the Nameless Scriptures. Considers suicide as heretical.

NPCs

  • Tergol. Child-thief
  • Anuk Schleger. Monk of the Creton order
  • The Basilisks. Two and two-headed. See She and He.
  • She. First of the basilisks born from the Bergen Chrypt. Few see her but many still walk her twin paths. Spawned many but only He survived. See Lusi and Arkh.
  • Lusi. She’s head of Denial.
  • Arkh. She’s head of Deception. Claims to be the first prophet of truths.
  • He. Basilisk. Curses his evil mother, She. See Verhu and Gorgh.
  • Verhu. Head of He. Most worshipped Basilisk head. Predicts inexorable annihilation, always right and utterly full of himself. Loves his position and hungers for temples to be raised in his name.
  • Gorgh. Head of He. Doesn’t know the damned truth. Bitter and envious of his twin brother Verhu.
  • Josilfa Migol. Arch-priestess of the Two-Headed Basilisks. Rules Galgenbeck. Colludes with Nechrubel, who gave her eternal life.
  • Nechrubel. God, the shadow that covers all. Melancholy, crop failure, conflict, and war. Whispered the apocalyptic prophecies in Verhu’s ear.
  • Shadow King. Obscured by ritual. The slaves if the servants of the courtiers of the King come forth and do his will.
  • King Sigfúm the Kind. Defeated king of Grift. Believes prophecies of Verhu and prepares his people for mass suicide off the 1000m cliff of Terion to The Endless Sea. Not approved by The Two-Headed Basilisks.

Items

  • Nameless Scriptures. Lost texts written in year 562 by Anuk Schleger on Verhu’s prophecies. Discovered 300 years later in Schleger’s tomb; it was found to be true and replaced all other Scripture .
